What is a benchmark?

A benchmark is a market index that a fund compares itself against, such as the Nifty 500 TRI for a flexi cap fund. TRI (Total Return Index) includes dividends.

If a fund consistently beats its benchmark after costs, the fund manager is adding value. Each fund page shows its returns next to its benchmark's.
